CrossFit for Kids and Our Health
By Alana Clark
“CrossFit Kids” is a curriculum designed for children in their elementary years. Visit CrossFit Inc.’s “CrossFit Kids” website and here’s what you will find:
CrossFit Kids is a method for teaching Greg Glassman’s CrossFit to children ages 3-18. Based on the principle of Mechanics, Consistency and then Intensity, CrossFit Kids emphasizes good movement throughout childhood and adolescence. Consistently good mechanics translates to physical literacy, enhanced sports performance and fewer sports injuries for kids. Not only that, a vast body of research indicates that exercise is beneficial to cognitive function, which means consistent adherence to the program can have a positive impact on children’s academic achievement.
At CrossFit Novato, we believe fitness with our kids reaches far beyond the physical benefits. Children in our families who participate in regular exercise report sleeping better, developing stronger relationships with peers, and even performing better in school. That’s why we’re excited to announce the return of our CrossFit Kids program scheduled to officially launch October 20, 2018!
Not sure if CrossFit Kids is right for your youngster(s)? Not a worry. We’ve decided to offer a few FREE kids classes in advance of our official launch date. Our CrossFit Kids mini course will run on Saturday September 22nd from 9:00-9:45 AM, Wednesday September 26th from 4:30-5:15 PM, and Saturday September 29th from 9:00-9:45 AM. The purpose of our FREE mini course is to share the curriculum with you and your child, allow your child to experience FUN fitness, and ultimately see if the program is the right fit for your family prior to committing to the comprehensive fall program.
Again, the FREE mini camp will run on Saturday September 22nd from 9:00-9:45 AM, Wednesday September 26th from 4:30-5:15 PM, and Saturday September 29th from 9:00-9:45 AM.
CrossFit Kids aims to instill a positive association with exercise, a desire to be fit, and a goal to live a long healthy life. The kids program takes the basic movements of CrossFit– squatting, pushing, pulling– and allows children to learn and experience these lessons in a fun and supportive environment. Similar to learning basic gymnastics principles, children who engage in a general functional fitness program early means they have an opportunity to move well as they age. “Workouts” that are prescribed for the kids are general and infinitely scaleable for any level or ability. We also play games and vary programming so that kids stay engaged and excited about trying new movements each session.
Children (and adults, too!) love to play. This concept of play is a critical component for physical development in kids. We will use this idea of “play” to make fitness fun! While having fun, the kids will be learning skills that they can use in future athletic journeys, as well as in life’s daily activities. The games that are incorporated into the workouts will encourage teamwork and camaraderie, while supporting and encouraging their peers. Throughout each session, each child will build their confidence as they learn new skills and improve coordination, agility, flexibility, balance, strength, and power.
Our CrossFit Kids Coach’s Story
Alana Clark experienced her first CrossFit class in March 2015. Today, she can’t imagine her life without CrossFit. Ask Alana and she will tell you it’s not just the fitness and the workouts. It’s the human connection, the community, and the support from all the other coaches and members that push her outside of her comfort zone to set goals and achieve them. CrossFit has changed Alana’s life in numerous ways and she can’t wait to see it’s effect on our younger generation.
Alana and her husband, Coach Mikkel, have a 6 year old son Kai, who has spent many hours in the gym over the years. She noticed their son was starting to imitate the movements at home–burpees in the bathtub anyone?! (Not recommended!). He started incorporating some of the fitness lingo into family conversations. Kai, and his interest in CrossFit, became an inspiration for Alana to pursue the development of a kids program.
Alana was raised in Napa, and feels extremely fortunate to be able to raise their son in Marin County. In her spare time, you can find Alana enjoying the great outdoors with her husband and son, whether it’s hiking, riding bikes, or looking for sea glass at local beaches.
